The boy shouts it, Shen Tingjun dangles the chocolate, and Jiang Wanwan snatches it anyway. Three characters, three motivations, zero exposition. But the real dialogue brilliance is in what's NOT said. When Li Shiyuan asks "What happened, Little Jiang? Did you twist your ankle?" — he's trying to save them from an awkward encounter. Jiang Wanwan knows it. The reader knows it. But Xu Huirong can't help herself: "She didn't twist her ankle. She's just lazy and made him carry her!" That's the kind of dialogue that reveals character in a single line. Xu Huirong doesn't just hate her stepsister — she needs everyone to know she hates her stepsister. It's performative cruelty, and the fact that Li Shixiang and Li Shiyuan just stand there in silence says everything about how uncomfortable even good people feel around that kind of toxicity. Shen Tingjun's internal voice is equally distinct. "The revolution is about to be won!" — a hooligan's romantic optimism, delivered with zero self-awareness. I'm obsessed.
