There's something deeply symbolic about the bathtub scene that I can't stop thinking about. Water as a boundary-dissolver — she's naked, he's fully clothed, and the moment he falls in, both of their layers of protection are gone. The overflow from the tub is almost prophetic: everything is about to flood, the apocalypse is coming tomorrow, and right now these two are trapped in a small space of shared vulnerability. But the real symbolism I want to talk about is the blanket. She starts completely uncovered, he wraps her in it to carry her — it's an act of both covering and containing. She's being protected but also restrained. And then when they're both in the water, the blanket is irrelevant. The apocalypse theme runs underneath everything here: normal social rules, shame, propriety — all of it is about to become meaningless. The system itself is a kind of symbolic framework, a game-like structure imposed on a collapsing world. Sheng He treating the apocalypse like "leveling up in a game" is both darkly funny and deeply tragic — she's been through real trauma (murdered by an obsessive admirer in her past life) and now she's approaching survival as entertainment. The storage space she's bargaining for represents security in an insecure world, and the favorability system represents human connection as a survival mechanism. Both are things she never had growing up — her parents were absent, she was raised by servants, and her only real relationships were transactional. Now she's learning to build something genuine while pretending it's all a strategy.
Let's talk about dialogue because this author knows exactly how to make characters sound like actual human beings instead of plot devices. The Xu Huipeng scene is a masterclass in child dialogue: "The food you brought home was leftovers! Mom reheated it, and it had no flavor. Sun Xiaohu said that food is only good right after it's made, and he never eats leftovers. I don't want to eat leftovers, either! I want fresh food!" That's not a kid who's been written by an adult pretending to be a kid. That's a kid who has heard these words from other kids and is now weaponizing them. The repetition, the indignation, the sheer petty logic — perfect. And Shen Tingjun's negotiation: "Call me brother-in-law." Simple. Effective. The boy shouts it, Shen Tingjun dangles the chocolate, and Jiang Wanwan snatches it anyway. Three characters, three motivations, zero exposition. But the real dialogue brilliance is in what's NOT said. When Li Shiyuan asks "What happened, Little Jiang? Did you twist your ankle?" — he's trying to save them from an awkward encounter. Jiang Wanwan knows it. The reader knows it. But Xu Huirong can't help herself: "She didn't twist her ankle. She's just lazy and made him carry her!" That's the kind of dialogue that reveals character in a single line. Xu Huirong doesn't just hate her stepsister — she needs everyone to know she hates her stepsister. It's performative cruelty, and the fact that Li Shixiang and Li Shiyuan just stand there in silence says everything about how uncomfortable even good people feel around that kind of toxicity. Shen Tingjun's internal voice is equally distinct. "The revolution is about to be won!" — a hooligan's romantic optimism, delivered with zero self-awareness. I'm obsessed.
Starting from the first click I made on this book, right to its current last chapter, it is easy to see that author has put a significant hardwork into this work, and he truly has written something brilliant.I hope it doesn't get buried under a pile of junks and gets to shine like it truly deserves.Keep up the good work Author.
