I need to talk about the alley scene because the atmosphere in this book is genuinely cinematic. Let me paint it for you: "The scattered dust on the ground drifted upward under the moonlight, accompanied by a few lingering laments of the crows; the air remained charged with a tight sense of oppression." That's not just description, that's a mood. You can FEEL the tension after Wen Jing's gang leaves. The crows aren't even gone yet, they're just lingering like they're also processing what they witnessed. And then the lamplight casting mottled shadows on Jiang Yunong's face while she's curled in the corner? I literally got chills reading that. But the worldbuilding doesn't stop at atmosphere. The Dongling Spirit Hub itself feels like a real place with real politics. Different sects sending candidates, each with their own questions for the exam, Hall Masters with their own rivalries (Fan Li vs Mu Heng's old teacher over a test question??), grading elders complaining about workload. This isn't just a backdrop, it's a living, breathing ecosystem. The written exam scene is also great worldbuilding in miniature. The scrolls transforming into streaks of flowing light, the bell chiming, the candidates sitting in the central square under the fierce sun. You can feel the heat, the pressure, the thousands of people all writing at once. And then the reveal that the final question is from Lingling Sect and it's impossibly hard? That's worldbuilding as plot device, and it works perfectly. The secret grading room at midnight is another standout. Ink-green robes, jade belts, more than a dozen elders behind long tables piled high with scrolls. Fan Li's boisterous laughter echoing in that space when he finds the perfect score. It feels like a scene from a wuxia film. I could see the lighting, the camera angles.
I really loved it. Once you will start reading, I bet you will not stop. Just can't wait for more chapters
