I need to talk about the stakes here because on the surface this story seems low-stakes — it's just a girl doing farm work, right? But the longer I read, the more I realize the author is building tension on multiple levels simultaneously, and the potential for things to go wrong is everywhere. Level one: physical survival. Su Meier is doing labor she's completely unprepared for. She's exhausted, her body aches, and she's being watched by people who are already skeptical of her. Fang Zhaodi literally says 'she's slow herself, drags everyone down.' If Su Meier can't keep up, she risks being exposed as the fraud she essentially is — a city girl playing at being a worker. Level two: social survival. She's already walking a tightrope with her mother's secret egg deliveries. If anyone finds out she's being pampered while doing 'revolutionary labor,' the political consequences could be severe. This is a time period where being labeled a spoiled capitalist daughter isn't just embarrassing — it's dangerous. Level three: the hunting itself. She's building a weapon and using it to kill animals, which means she's operating outside the approved activities of the threshing ground. If anyone discovers she's been hunting instead of working, she's done. But the most interesting level of stakes is the interpersonal one, and this is where the Song Cili dynamic becomes crucial. He already knows she has a bow. He already knows she can hunt. He's the only person who has seen through her performance. And now he's coming to her house at eight in the evening to complete a trade. This is the moment where everything could either click into place or explode. The author has set up a situation where Song Cili holds all the information — he knows her secret, and she doesn't know what he'll do with it. Is he going to report her? Blackmail her? Protect her? The uncertainty is what makes this scene so tense. Meanwhile, Shen Jianyang is circling like a vulture, misreading every interaction, and completely unaware that he's not the protagonist of this romantic subplot. The stakes keep rising with every chapter, and I have a very strong feeling that the threshing ground is about to become the setting for something much bigger than rice drying.
