I need to talk about this scene at the nunnery because it completely wrecked me in the best way. The way Pei Xu approaches Sang Wu is so layered—on the surface he's just a nephew-in-law doing his duty, but the subtext is practically vibrating off the page. He brews tea for her, his movements unhurried, knuckles like jade. She accepts it with both hands. The intimacy of that small gesture between two people who are technically family is electric. And then he asks her the question that changes everything: is her vigil for her deceased husband born of affection or gratitude? He's not just being nosy—he's trying to read her, to understand what kind of woman he's dealing with, and honestly I think part of him doesn't want to admit he's drawn to her. Sang Wu's response is masterful. She plays the virtuous widow perfectly, talking about how she and Xinlang were brought together by painting, how he was sincere and deserved sincerity in return. But then she flips it on him with this line: 'If even someone as outstanding as you cannot manage it, how could I possibly do so?' That's not just refusal—that's a challenge. She's saying, you can't do it, so why would I be expected to? And Pei Xu is completely speechless. The author writes that only then does he understand why Linqin warned him this girl might seem obedient but isn't. I love that moment of realization for him. He came in thinking he could navigate this, and she just dismantled his entire approach without raising her voice. The tension between them is unreal.

So I will be finishing this book with the next few chapters. There will be a book two coming out after that explains what happens with Darron and brings in more drama. I just felt like there was too much to try and cram into one book, and I’m not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet.
