Overall, Lucius considered Lucy to be much better than himself which was why he had not known how to take it when she had asked him out. She did tell him that they would likely not get married or anything serious due to her family but that she didn't want to be deprived of the experience. They did spend a lot of time together, some other students were friendly but not something you'd call close friends. Especially with Lucy's half-sister and her gang making it so that befriending the two of them meant earning their ire.

What I love about how this story sets up its world is that it doesn't just go "boom, apocalypse." We get this slow-burn dread that makes everything feel so real. The weather going crazy for six months. Natural disasters happening one after another. Hospitals overflowing. People helping each other at first, then getting too exhausted and just... stopping. That detail about people staying home to defend themselves instead of rushing to help others? That's not just worldbuilding, that's a commentary on how fragile civilization is. And the sensory details! "The increasingly gloomy sky outside, black and heavy, like clouds about to collapse." I could literally feel that atmosphere pressing down. Ji Heng walking home through streets crowded with grim-faced people, traffic jams, frequent accidents — it all paints this picture of a world holding its breath. Then you contrast that with the absurdity of a baby hatching from a fossil egg in Ji Heng's study. One moment you're reading about societal collapse, the next you're reading about a 55-centimeter infant demanding to be fed. The tonal whiplash is real, but it works because the world feels so grounded before the weird stuff hits. Also, the fact that Tian Le has an optical brain named Tutu that transmigrated with him? The juxtaposition of ancient-earth apocalypse aesthetics — mosquito nets, antique phones, Simmons mattresses — with interstellar tech is such a fun worldbuilding choice. It makes me want to know more about what the Interstellar Research Institute is, what the Transmigration Alliance does, and why Tian Le was sent back in time in the first place.
