love the author's books. finished reading unscientific and now here i am
looking forward to a new horror story but from the setup of this being a bus full of college students I can't imagine this being a very long story compared to other novels. Could someone tell me how long this novel is in raws?
Extremely biased review from the author here.Initial few chapters may seem slow but it picks up very fast later on.Slow romance. The ML will appear and will definitely help FL, but with hilarious results.Pease read if you want an intelligent female lead, who is not always thinking of revenge but wants to have a very fulfilling life. After living well when your enemies are struggling is the best revenge, right?
Let me just say this chapter structure is a masterclass in controlled pacing. You start in a domestic space—Mingtang's kitchen, her father visiting, the cat hissing, the oil-paper packet with its wheat-and-meat scent still clinging to it. It's slow, it's warm, it's the kind of scene where nothing explosive happens but everything is happening. And then—bam—you cut to the Imperial Academy on examination day, students streaming out, and immediately single out ONE person who doesn't go home. Zhao Yu. The transition is so clean you don't even notice the shift in temperature. One moment you're worrying about tuition fees, the next you're in a teahouse where a man is about to get his head handed to him in a board game. The author doesn't waste a single sentence on exposition. We learn about chupu through the scene itself—the rules, the stakes, the cultural context—all woven into Zhao Yu's actions and the other players' reactions. And the teahouse scene? It starts quiet, almost sleepy. Scholars sipping tea, debating philosophy. Then Ma Ronghuan arrives with his silk robes and his folding fan, and the energy shifts. The game becomes the battlefield. Hours pass—'the incense burner still sent up wispy trails of pine smoke, but the tea had long grown cold'—and by the time Ma Ronghuan snaps, we've been riding this tension for what feels like a full chapter even though it's probably only a few thousand characters. The pacing here is deliberate, almost meditative, until it isn't. And then it snaps like a bowstring.
This has been such a cute story. Just sappy enough to keep me sighing.

The start of the book is amazing. It has a touch of mystery, and the writing makes you willing to be immersed in the world of the book. As Dory says, Just keep swimming, in the plot of the book. A very interesting read! I will be reading daily till I finish the chapters.
The book is actually better than I expected, the start has a fine captivating sense to make people stay and world build is good. But the conversations are too long as times with no directory towards the speaker, makes it hard are times to follow through. You can try adding the names of characters at every two or three lines . overall, the book is good .
