Hurry up please. This chapter by chapter stuff is getting a bit lame.
I need to talk about the scene where Jiaojiao walks through the village with her kids and the chicken soup, because the author really knows how to paint a picture. First, there's this moment where Jiaojiao stops to help an old woman on the way to find Fu Ting. The old woman had been sold as a child bride, never eaten meat in her entire life, and the very first bite of meat she ever had was from Jiaojiao giving her two braised chicken wings just for pointing the way. That scene hit me so hard. One small act of kindness, and this elderly woman who has suffered her whole life gets her first taste of meat. The text says: "In all her long life, she had never eaten meat." Just four words that carry so much weight. Then you have the field scene—Jiaojiao standing on the hill where all the laborers are working, addressing the crowd. The visual of her with two little kids, holding a pot of chicken soup, facing down an entire village of gossips? That's a movie scene. That's a wide shot. I could see it perfectly. And the contrast between the two female leads' appearances is interesting from a worldbuilding perspective. The text explicitly mentions that the original author deliberately kept Xiaodie's looks vague to make Jiaojiao's beauty stand out more. But then it comments on the irony: the author's point was that inner beauty matters more, except Xiaodie's character is written as utterly trash. So the world itself seems to be commenting on its own shallow logic. That's meta and I love it. The village setting feels lived-in. You've got the fields where people are working, the hospital where Huo Yunshu ends up, the paths between houses where encounters happen naturally. It's a rural 1970s Chinese setting with sent-down youths, collective labor, village gossip networks that move faster than internet—everything feels grounded. One detail that really sold the atmosphere: when Jiaojiao slips the cloth bundle of chicken wings into the old woman's basket before the woman can even react. The warmth of the food, the speed of the gesture, the fact that the old woman only realizes afterward—these are the kinds of sensory details that make a setting feel real rather than just a backdrop. The scene where the villagers close in on Jiaojiao, the sharp-eyed ones following Xiaodie's raised voice, the way the savory smell of chicken soup draws people in—this is all very cinematic. You can practically hear the murmurs, see the judgmental stares, feel the tension building until Dabao steps forward and shatters it with his hippopotamus jaw comment.
