Let me just sit with this for a second: Xia Yuan's life is now literally tied to a vampire's. If she dies, he dies. That's not a metaphor. That's not dramatic license. That is the actual, physical rule of this world. The external conflict is obvious — he's now bound to a supernatural being in a society where vampire hunters apparently still exist (or at least, the Blood Clan Code says to stay away from them). But the INTERNAL conflict is where this gets really interesting. Xia Yuan is a regular guy who got hit by a car and now has to renegotiate the fundamental terms of his existence. He's not a hero. He's not special. He's just a guy who wants to survive and maybe get some legal protection out of this deal. The stakes escalate beautifully in Chapter 5. First, there's the physical stake — she almost drained him dry because his blood is 'truly exceptional.' Then there's the legal stake — he realizes the contract is completely one-sided and starts drafting a prenup. Then there's the emotional stake — she gets genuinely upset when he suggests dissolving the contract, revealing that despite all her centuries of experience, she's actually terrified of being alone. "No! Our Blood Clan Code states that once a Contract is established, it cannot be dissolved unless one of us dies." — this line is everything. She's not saying it because she cares about him. She's saying it because the alternative is... what? Being alone again? After being asleep for thirteen years and waking up to a world she doesn't understand? The suspense here isn't about whether they'll fall in love — it's about whether Xia Yuan can survive long enough to figure out what this whole arrangement actually means. And honestly, that's way more compelling.
