The chapter opens with this incredibly tense exchange between Yin Xuzhao and Yu Xiao—negotiations, threats, the whole nine yards—and then it just EXPLODES into pure chaos. One minute you have Yin Xuzhao dramatically declaring his feelings while half-undressed, the next minute Yu Xiao is kicking the door open like "that's enough," and then it escalates into an actual underwater fight scene with dragon tendons and magic knives and I was not prepared for how fast this went. What I love about the pacing here is how the author uses the setting. The underwater dragon palace creates this claustrophobic, pressure-cooker atmosphere where there's literally nowhere to escape. When Yin Xuzhao says "we are still underwater, and even without a grand formation, he could kill Yu Xiao," it reminds you that every move has consequences in this environment. The water-avoiding membrane shattering, the need to hold breath—it all raises the stakes organically without feeling forced. The scene transitions are also smart. You go from the tense negotiation → Yin Xuzhao's bizarre confession → Yu Xiao's eavesdropping → the fight → and then it ends with Yu Xiao walking away with a dragon tendon in his hand, already planning to make soup out of it. That ending is such a perfect tonal shift—from emotional chaos to cold, calculated revenge—and it leaves you wanting more immediately. I also appreciate how the author doesn't waste time on exposition. We learn about the three-thousand-character letter, the promise from seven years ago, the cultivation seal, the marriage in three days—all of this is woven naturally into dialogue and internal monologue rather than info-dumped. The tanuki demon's interruption about the demon curse is a great example: it serves double duty as both plot complication and comic relief. The fight scene itself is choreographed well too. It's fast, it's visceral, and it has clear emotional beats within the action—Chu Xuyun grabbing Yin Xuzhao's wrist, the recognition moment, the immediate pivot to violence. The author knows exactly when to slow down for emotional moments and when to speed up for action. If I had one minor critique, it's that the transition from the emotional confrontation to the fight feels just slightly rushed. Yin Xuzhao goes from "I won't let you take him back" to full combat mode pretty quickly, but honestly, given the emotional intensity, it works. These characters are so wound up that any spark would set them off. The chapter ends on such a strong note though. Yu Xiao's internal monologue about making dragon tendon soup for Chu Xuyun is both darkly funny and genuinely unsettling. Perfect cliffhanger energy.
Xia Xiuyan is the most contradictory person I have EVER encountered and I am HERE for it. First, he GRABS Qiu Xinran's throat when she walks in on what he thinks is a dead body. He genuinely considers killing her. Cold. Calculated. And then — and THEN — the next chapter he's telling her to run to save her own life, and when she comes BACK with a wooden staff to help him fight, his entire energy shifts. The moment he shoves her aside and says 'Get out of the way!' before standing his ground to face the big attacker? That's not cruelty. That's him trying to protect her in the only way he knows how. And she comes back anyway. Of course she comes back. Their dynamic is so messy and real — he hands her back her hairpin, she refuses it, then immediately ties her hair up and gives him this sly little show like nothing happened. The fact that he thinks 'it would have been a shame if she'd died tonight' and then later admits the night wouldn't have been so cold if he were alone? CHILLS. Absolute chills.

I haven't started this book yet but after reading the author's first novel and seeing their growth in writing in the first 100 chapters I have no doubt this story will be equally amazing.
