I'm still not over the plane tree scene. Let me just say that right now. After the entire dinner confrontation—after she slams her chopsticks down, after she threatens to beat her brother up one more time, after she tells her mother to go ahead and spread the word about her own "nobility"—Lin Qiaozhi walks out. She walks past neighbors who are all peeking and whispering, and she just... goes to sit under a tree. And then: "She rubbed her eyes miserably, then tilted her head back and blinked hard, forcing the glimmering moisture to dry in her eyes." Not a single tear falls. Not a single sob. She just blinks them away like she's processing an error message. And that is SO much worse than if she'd cried openly. Because it shows how exhausted she is—how many times has this happened that she's already trained herself not to fall apart in public? The author then does this incredible thing: cuts to Zhou Shu's family celebrating. His mother slapping his father's arm, his father saying "Break me another one so I can see," the little brother crunching on a cucumber. Zhou Shu is standing there like a "young sapling" with three broken steel rods in front of him. He finally gets to say, "Sister Qiaozhi even praised me today," and his parents' eyes light up. Two families. One girl. One is grateful and celebrating her success. The other is using her and calling her selfish for refusing. And she's sitting under a tree blinking away tears while neighbors gossip about whether anyone will marry her. I was not prepared for this level of emotional damage in a single chapter sequence.
