I need a minute. Chu Lin'an. Thirteen or fourteen years old. Pale, frightened, and his own MOTHER is pressing a bribe into his hand and making him go serve the brother who supposedly betrayed the family. Listen to this: "Your eldest brother is the one responsible for all of this. Who are you going to choose?" She's manipulating a CHILD into thinking his own brother's suffering is his fault. And the boy—oh god, the boy looks at his feverish little brother, then at his mother's desperate face, and he just... goes. His fists tighten. Conflict flashes through his eyes. And he walks toward that prison cart like he's walking to his own execution. Meanwhile Chu Linzhang, who is dying in that cart, asks him the most human question possible: "Do you hate me?" And when the boy says he believes him, that's when I actually felt something crack in my chest. This man is dying, covered in wounds, branded on the face, and his first concern is whether his younger brother still loves him. The family dynamics here are so toxic it's suffocating. Everyone is using everyone. Lady Li hiding money in her menstrual cloth because she knows no one will search there—she's so ruthless she'd rather let her crippled husband suffer than share her secrets. And Chu Linzhang? He's the only one who seems to accept that none of them deserve sympathy. "None of them deserved sympathy. There would surely be plenty more infighting along the road." He's watching his family destroy itself and he can barely lift his head.

Albeit the female lead unnerving me a few times, this was another excellent book from Emma. I can never get tired of your stories.
