A lovely piece, really enjoyed it
Let me just say this: Xiao Yun is one of the most fascinating emperors I've encountered in web fiction, and it's not even close. The man is vain, politically astute, casually cruel, and somehow still compelling. When he asks Xie Zhe whether Xie Caiqing is more handsome than him? That's not just insecurity—that's a ruler who genuinely believes his own legend and wants confirmation. And when Xie Zhe humbly says he's not worthy of comparison? Xiao Yun doesn't press further. He moves on. That's power. He doesn't need to keep fishing for compliments because he already knows the answer. But the real character moment for me is Jiang Huaichu. On the surface, he's this delicate, pretty prince from Nanyue who seems soft and reserved. The Consort Dowager keeps calling him out on it—"you're too reserved, your brother keeps you under his thumb"—and at first you believe her. But then he speaks in that teahouse, dismantling those arrogant examinees with such precision and grace, and you realize: this is a man who has been playing the long game his entire life. He rejected Xiao Yun three years ago, and now he's come back not out of weakness or regret, but because he calculated that getting close to the emperor was the most strategic move available. The dynamic between them is going to be explosive. Xiao Yun rejected him once, and Jiang Huaichu is returning on his own terms. There's power in that reversal. I'm also fascinated by how the text treats Jiang Huaichu's appearance—everyone notices it, from Xie Zhe's captivated subordinate who painted his portrait to the commoners of Junzhou who boast about him. But his words are what actually carry weight. The author keeps reminding us that looks are a currency in this world, but intelligence is what spends it.
