"Trap!" His long fingers jabbed. "You set a trap! You're going to use this as an excuse to hit me later, right? Dream on!" He threw the cigarette pack and stomped on it twice. I cannot stop thinking about this exchange. Shen Qingci says "Go ahead and smoke—just this once" and Xi Xingye's immediate reaction is pure paranoia and defensive humor. He thinks it's a trap. After everything she's done for him—stood up to his abusive family, defended him at the dinner table—he still can't believe someone would genuinely give him permission to do something he wanted. It's heartbreaking and hilarious at the same time. And then her line earlier: "Then don't respect me—insult me properly!" Xi Xingye saying that with complete seriousness after she asks if he thinks she was disrespectful... the man has been so starved for genuine interaction that even negative attention feels better than the polite tea-serving performance his family expects. The dialogue in this section is so sharp it could cut glass. Every character has a distinct voice—Lin Shanwan's fake sweetness, Xi Zhenghao's bluster, Shen Qingci's cold precision, and Xi Xingye's chaotic energy. When Shen Qingci says "See it now?" after slapping the kid twice, it's delivered with this terrifying calm that makes you want to both cheer and run away.
Great read
Solid story. Good ending. A bit pricey per chapter, but overall less expensive than the never ending ongoing stories that get boring.

Okay, let me just say this out loud—Chen Qing is the most dangerously competent person I've read in years. Like, she walks into this 1970s factory committee office and immediately starts playing 4D chess while everyone else is still figuring out checkers. The way she handles Tian Mengya is chef's kiss. When Director Liu dumps the welcome party task on her (which everyone knows is a setup for her to fail), Chen Qing doesn't just accept it passively. She immediately counters by demanding Tian Mengya as her assistant. Think about that—she's essentially saying, "Fine, I'll take this poisoned chalice, but I'm bringing the poison's source along for the ride." It's brilliant. She's forcing her rival to work under her, which flips the entire power dynamic. And the rumor mill? Chen Qing doesn't even engage with it. She just keeps working while everyone around her is gossiping about whether she's fallen for Researcher He. The contrast between her calm professionalism and everyone else's dramatic speculation is hilarious. Yang Xiujin is another fascinating character. He's genuinely devoted to the original host—buying her sponge cake, waiting outside her office, looking "sorrowful" as he follows her into work. But Chen Qing sees right through the performative romance. Her cold rejection isn't cruel; it's boundary-setting. She won't be manipulated by someone who pursued her predecessor relentlessly. The sibling dynamics between He Yuxiang and He Yuting are also worth noting. He Yuxiang is this feral little gremlin who pinches his cheek and snatches money, but there's genuine care underneath. He hides meat for his brother. He's protective. And Chen Qing? She's learning to be a guardian even as she's still figuring out her own survival. That's the core relationship arc I'm watching—the found family forming between these three people who have every reason not to trust each other.
Already so excited for this one. Can’t wait for more.
