The story seems a little quick, not in fast passed but other books definitely drag out every single detail about every little thing, while this is written with hope and joy in the pages. The Black Daisy(the author) wanted feedback and grew in their writing so well, staying on my bookshelf for sure.

It was a roller coaster ride with emotions and sudden twist at the end that I didn’t expect. I am glad that it didn’t end abruptly.. it was like a second chance at life to have a happy ending where both main characters were committed to one another from the beginning instead of a chaotic life.

I need to talk about this conversation between Zhe Junwu and Xiao Sheng because it genuinely wrecked me in the best way. They're both sold into the palace, but their relationships with their families are completely different, and the Crown Prince's analysis of it is chillingly brilliant. Sidou was the first sold and resents his parents. Xiao Sheng was the last sold and feels no resentment. And Zhe Junwu? Also the first sold, but she doesn't hate hers. The Crown Prince calls her foolish for that, and honestly, I think he's wrong—or maybe he's just revealing something about himself. He was never taught archery by the Emperor, never received that favoritism the First Prince got, and yet he's the Crown Prince. His entire life is about proving himself through achievement because he was never given love outright. When he asks Zhe Junwu 'do you hate your parents?' it's not small talk. It's the question of someone who has never been chosen. And then General the parrot runs into the study crying 'Junwu'—the one creature in this entire palace who seems to love her unconditionally. Meanwhile Qiuyin is going cold on her, Yurong is scheming, and Eunuch Liu is calculating how to use her. Everyone in this story is either using someone or being used, and Zhe Junwu is the only one who seems genuinely confused by it all.
This was an excellent book!!! A must read!
