Shengmei drags her roommates to a hot pot restaurant and orders like twenty plates of meat. Guan Ju'er is worried she'll gain weight. Yingying is confused. And Shengmei just laughs and says: "A few words and I'll fall apart? Yes, I want to watch my weight, but indulging once in a while won't kill me." Then the author writes this line that I read three times: "And yet—through the pain and the heat—she felt it. The raw, undeniable sensation of being alive." I literally had to put the phone down. That's the emotional core of the entire chapter right there. It's not about the food. It's about her choosing to feel something other than bitterness. Choosing to sit in heat and spice and let it burn and just... exist. After being reduced to tears by Qu Xiaoxiao's words, she reclaims her body, her appetite, her right to take up space. The friendship dynamics here are so tender too. Guan Ju'er suggesting they eat at home to save money—not because she's cheap but because she's worried Shengmei is spiraling. Yingying immediately pivoting to "AS LONG AS YOU'RE FINE I'M LOADING UP ON MEAT" like she can feel the tension breaking. Andy just... being there, steady and easygoing. These four women in that little apartment, that's the real romance of this story. Not some love interest, but the warmth of people who choose to stay. Life will only get better. Won't it? I hope so. For her, at least.
