Loving this story! Lots of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. The author did have some issues updating for a month or so, but we all have IRL issues. Glad she is back! Can’t wait to see where she will lead us next!

I want to talk about how this author builds tension because honestly it's masterful and I need to process it. Chapter 6 starts with an intimate, almost tender moment—Lu Huaijin carrying Su Yao back to her room, candlelight, the implication of what's about to happen. We're lulled into thinking maybe, just maybe, there's something real here. The prose slows down, the sensory details multiply, and for a page or two you almost forget she's trapped. Then Chapter 7 hits like a truck. She wakes up to find informants everywhere. Her own courtyard is a prison with better decor. The pacing shifts from slow and suffocating to rapid and paranoid. She sends Chun Tao for medicine, we think it's for health, and then—boom—the two bowls. The contraceptive and the fertility potion. The author doesn't rush this reveal. Su Yao says "Set them down. They're a bit too hot; I'll drink them later." And then waits until Chun Tao leaves. That pause. That deliberate silence. The reader is sitting there knowing what she's about to do while she takes her time, and it's agonizing. Then the birthday. The Empress Dowager's marriage proposal. The maids gossiping under the plum tree. The author uses gossip as a narrative device here—letting us learn the stakes through other people's whispers rather than exposition. "Three years, and not even a title." That line lands like a hammer because we've been living inside Su Yao's head and we already know the answer: she was never going to be enough. And then Lu Chuyao appearing in the snow. The pacing accelerates again—her worry, her running to meet him, the umbrella falling, the faint, the blood. It's a cascade of emotional beats that hits so fast you can't catch your breath. By the time she's bleeding on the snow, I was genuinely shaken. The author knows exactly when to slow down and when to sprint, and this chapter is proof.
Everything in this text circles back to food, and I think that's deeply intentional. Ye Wuyou's entire worldview has been shaped by starvation—both the physical starvation of her body and the emotional starvation of her past life. When she says 'just being alive and having enough to eat' is all she cares about, that's not a casual statement. That's the philosophy of someone who has been systematically deprived. The chicken leg is the central symbol here. Ling Yu withholding it isn't cruelty—it's care disguised as stinginess. He's protecting her from her own weakness. But Ye Wuyou can't see it because her framework for understanding the world is still 'people take from me,' not 'people give to me.' Every act of kindness from Ling Yu gets filtered through her trauma lens and comes out as suspicion. Her space with all that prepared food represents her old life—safety, abundance, control. But she can't fully access it. She has to sneak into it, eat in secret, and suffer the consequences when her body rejects it. The space is both her salvation and her prison. She's caught between two worlds, and food is the battleground where that conflict plays out every single day. The porridge she thicken by pouring out water first—small act of care for people who don't know she's doing it. That's the whole theme in miniature: love in a world where love has to be hidden.

Don’t bother reading. From grammatical errors, to names being changed from chapter to chapter, the story isn’t going to hook you in. I got up to chapter 6 and I’m done. The first few chapters should hook you in. Nor make you hate the characters. There’s no depth of the characters.
These last two chapters cracked me up. Sophia is getting what she deserved. I love Amelia's spirit not giving AF. More updates, please!
