The pacing in these chapters is absolutely ruthless and I love it. Let me break down the structure because it's textbook perfect: Chapter opens with Pearl's jealousy — quiet, internal, simmering. We get her resentment about the hair ties, her itching palms. This is the calm before the storm, and it's deliberately slow. The author lets us sit with Pearl's twisted feelings. Then BOOM — she sneaks out during pottery class. The pacing accelerates. She ruins Little Mud's dress. Feels better. Simple cause and effect. But then the story pivots. Little Mud's antler creation becomes the center of attention. The scene shifts to wonder and admiration. For a moment, I thought this was going to be a happy scene. The author lulls you. Then Yin Xuetong's jar gets ruined, she throws a tantrum, runs to the changing room, and discovers HER dress is also destroyed. The pacing snaps back to tension. Everything accelerates from here. The accusation sequence is where the pacing really shines. Teacher Han gives her speech. Silence. Pearl whispers to Yin Xuetong. Dou Siyi is framed. Xiao Ling Bao intervenes. The teachers resist. Dou Siyi breaks down. Xiao Ling Bao reveals the evidence. And then — Yin Xuetong yanking the plastic wrap from Pearl's pocket. The cliffhanger ending is perfect. We don't get resolution. We get the moment of exposure hanging in the air. I immediately wanted to read the next chapter. Also worth noting: the author doesn't rush the emotional beats. Dou Siyi's breakdown gets space. Xiao Ling Bao's trauma response gets space. The teachers' class bias gets space. Nothing feels hurried despite the high tension.
I love this book! Please continue to make this a great book with a happy ending. I love how you portray Sophie as Sophie and Sophie and Jared together. They are match made in perfection! i also applaud the closeness of Sophie’s family, which makes me wish i have brothers like her. Keep it up!
I can’t wait for more chapters to this book. It’s really getting good.
