The way she ties the gold to capitalism is such a period-accurate move too. In this era, being called a capitalist could literally get you killed. So the kids now have this shared secret that binds them together and explains all the abuse they suffered. It's manipulative, sure, but it's also the only thing that keeps them from running away or being separated into an orphanage. The plot keeps this thread going with the firewood shortage, the debts, the Yang Xiujin situation—all of it feels like pieces of a larger puzzle clicking into place. I'm genuinely curious what the 'way to make a fortune' is, especially since she's already buying fabrics and practicing sewing. The author is definitely setting up a business arc here, and I'm here for it.
I love it!!! I'm torn between my constant yearning to see how it would end and my need for the book to continue. It the end I feel like a great ending would be best and would give me the opportunity to reread as much as I want.
Waiting for sequels to come and entetain us more also.
