This is the one place in the manor that hasn't been corrupted by the Dowager Consort's influence. The imagery throughout these chapters is surprisingly vivid for a text-heavy novel. I kept picturing the scene where she's wiping his hands with hot water — the copper basin, the steam, his deathly cold palms, the way she frowns at the conflicting auras of life and death swirling around him. It reads like a film scene. You can see the lighting, the textures, the tension in the air. And then there's the contrast between the main courtyard and the rest of the manor. The accounting office is where the Dowager Consort's power is actually exercised — delaying medicine, controlling silver, slowly starving the prince of resources. When Jiang Zhaoxue decides to go "move silver," the author paints this almost heist-like atmosphere. Two women and a few sturdy servants heading into enemy territory to reclaim what's theirs. The abandoned temple where she grew up is mentioned in passing but it lingers in my mind. Abandoned, near a burial ground, run by a blind fortune-teller who taught her everything she knows. It's a perfect origin story setting — dark, isolated, mysterious. I want to go back there in the narrative eventually. The world feels lived-in and politically layered. Every room has power dynamics attached to it.
