I want to talk about how the author uses silence and minimal dialogue as weapons. Xu Feng appears in that eavesdropping scene and says exactly one word: "Hm." That's it. One syllable. And it carries more authority and menace than any monologue could. He doesn't even need to ask questions or give orders in that moment—his presence alone is the threat. The author trusts the reader to understand that this man doesn't need to speak to dominate a room. Then there's Cui Xi, whose dialogue is this perfect study in performative sweetness. "Governor! Fourth Concubine has obtained some excellent Longjing tea and respectfully invites you over to enjoy something fresh!" The way she uses honorifics and excessive politeness as a weapon—she's not actually being nice, she's manipulating, and the dialogue makes that crystal clear without the author having to explain it. Qin Yan's dialogue is equally distinctive. When she finds out Xu Feng went near the Side Courtyard again, her voice "suddenly rising into a shrill pitch" and calling Qin Shu "that cursed place" and "that shameless bitch"—you can hear the exact frequency of her jealousy. And the most chilling line has to be when she says "The Governor ca—" and the chapter just cuts off mid-sentence. The author doesn't even let us finish hearing her threat. That's a cliffhanger that doesn't rely on action or revelation, just on the unbearable weight of an unfinished thought.
