The story line is good, you need a proof reader to make sure that books go out with correct grammar, spelling etc… when will the next chapters be ready, it’s taking ages, at this rate I will need to re-read book to remember what it’s all about.
The way this author builds the world is genuinely impressive. You don't get massive exposition dumps about the hierarchy or the politics—you just drop into scenes and the world reveals itself through behavior. Take the dinner scene. Within a few paragraphs, I know exactly what kind of place this is: over a dozen servants filing in single file with food boxes, the pig's trotter soup placed 'right in the center' like it's the centerpiece of a ceremony, Su Peisheng standing nearby judging everyone's table manners. The physical space of Li Wanran's courtyard matters—there's a stone table in the courtyard where Caiwei sits embroidering, an inner room Yinzhen comes out of, a window Yi looks through. These aren't just set dressing; they're stages for power dynamics. The next morning gossip scene is where the worldbuilding really shines. You don't need a chapter explaining the hierarchy—you just watch Jinxing sneering toward Zhang's eastern wing while embroidering, and suddenly you understand everything: who serves whom, who resents who, where the power flows. The entire backyard is a living organism, and every rustle of fabric carries information to every corner. And Mistress Song! The moment she leaves Li Wanran's courtyard and her 'gentle and pleasant smile vanishes completely, replaced by a look of indifference'—that single facial expression change tells you more about this world than any political treatise could. She's performing kindness one room away and shedding it the moment she crosses the threshold. Her maid Tinghe doesn't even flinch at the sudden coldness; she's just used to this. That's how normalized this kind of duplicity is. The Jiangnan painting is another brilliant worldbuilding detail. Misty rain, country roads, villagers working in fields—a whole world within a scroll, given as a gift that's supposed to be comforting but might actually be a weapon. The author doesn't overdescribe it; just enough to make you see it, then move on. The world feels lived-in because everyone in it is constantly performing, calculating, and observing. Nothing is accidental. Everything is a scene.
