The pacing here is masterful because it understands that trauma needs breathing room. After the intense tool tent scene, we get the lunch break—simple, almost mundane. "Today is the first day of work. I heard it is meat with cabbage." This shift from horror to hunger, from violation to pancake-sharing, creates this rhythmic breathing that keeps readers from collapsing under the weight. The structure moves in waves: work → rest → crisis → resolution → new crisis. Morning labor, lunch with Gu Qingqian, the tool tent discovery, the cart ride home where An Ruoxi slaps Xiao Jianjun, then the walk home where An Ruoxi confesses everything, then Yao Qingqing's home with Grandma Yao, then the next morning's digging assignment. Each wave crashes and recedes, but the water keeps rising. The Xiao Jianjun confrontation on the cart is perfectly paced. He starts with jealousy, escalates to personal attacks about Yao Qingqing's pregnancy, and An Ruoxi's slap comes as this explosive release. "Slap!" The single word as its own sentence—what a pacing choice. It's the narrative equivalent of that physical strike. But then the pacing slows again on the walk home, where An Ruoxi reveals her backstory. This is where the structure earns its emotional impact—we've had the action, now we get the context. The revelation that she agreed to Shen Zhongyi's demands because she wanted to return home so badly? That hits harder because we've had time to breathe. The final scene with Yao Chuanjiang ends on a cliffhanger that's more psychological than physical. "I already died once." What does that mean? The chapter ends there, and I immediately need to read the next one. That's good pacing—leaving us with questions, not answers.
