I need to talk about the eye contact scene because my heart actually physically hurt. Three weeks. Three weeks of separation and the moment their eyes meet across a crowded set, the entire world just... stops. "In that moment, time seemed to freeze. Everything around them came to a standstill, the clamor of voices hanging suspended in the air. Lin Shen held his breath, hearing nothing but the frantic pounding of his own heartbeat." This is the kind of writing that makes you slam the book against your chest. The author doesn't give us any internal monologue from Lu Jing's side—we only see Lin Shen's experience of being found, being seen, being searched for. And it's devastating because we know they have this history, this agreement, this whole private world between them, but out here in public they're just two people in a crowd. Then there's the autograph moment. Lin Shen is so flustered he can barely function. He's being pushed forward by the crowd, his waist getting poked from behind, and all he can think about is that the note Lu Jing is about to write might be something normal and safe, and it absolutely is not. The fact that he has to compose himself and say "Just write 'To Lin Shen, be happy every day'" like a normal person while his mind is somewhere else entirely—god, the restraint. And Xiao Xu! Poor oblivious Xiao Xu running around being excited about getting an autograph from his idol while his boss is literally writing a love note disguised as celebrity merch. The dramatic irony is killing me. Lin Shen stuffing that note into his pocket and pretending nothing happened while his face is burning? I can't. The CP chemistry here is off the charts—everything is charged, everything is layered, every glance means something.
I have never laughed so hard at a book. great writing!
