Hence if the Author unites Valerie with Hudson I am definitely going to quit reading. A cheater and an adulterer staying with his mistress and illegitimate child, living a happy family then why bother about a woman who he has DIVORCED. What makes him angry ? Because she is a Heiress? CEO?
There's a scene in here that I keep coming back to and I have to unpack it. Ji Junjiao pushes open the door to Qin Buwen's courtyard and the first thing that hits him—before he even sees her—is the SCENT. 'The room was lightly scented with incense. Mixed within it was the faint fragrance of a young woman's cosmetics. It was unmistakably... the scent of a lady's chamber.' The author doesn't need to describe what's behind the curtain. The SMELL does the work. That is masterful scene construction. You can feel the tension building before the curtain is even pulled back. And then—the visual. 'A shocking splash of crimson.' The dudou. The bed curtains. The translucent gauze between them where Qin Buwen can see 'the man's tall silhouette' but he's standing so rigid he might break. This scene is filmed like a movie. Every beat is deliberate. The knock. The silence. The command to guard the back entrance (which tells us SO MUCH about Ji Junjiao's instincts—he's still in investigator mode even while his brain is short-circuiting). Changqing asking 'why is your face so red?' and Ji Junjiao not even responding. Then there's the contrast with Yan Tang's scene—the blood on the handkerchief, the 'fragile, sickly beauty of a scholar wasting away from illness.' The author paints these two male leads as almost complementary opposites: Ji Junjiao is iron and restraint, Yan Tang is fire and fragility. Both are devastating in their own ways. And the Situ Residence description—'spacious but remarkably plain' compared to Qin Buwen's former residence. Ji Junjiao's incorruptibility isn't just stated, it's shown through the emptiness of his halls. The world feels lived-in because every location tells us something about the people who inhabit it.
