I read the scene where Chen Xi climbs onto the roof like a little mouse and just couldn't stop thinking about it. Not because it's dramatically intense, but because it's so quietly intimate the way it's written. Let me back up though—because this moment only works because of everything that comes before it. The march in the scorching sun, the fainting girls, the ox cart, the captain's surprise at Chen Xi's stamina. All of that establishes Chen Xi as physically capable in a world that keeps underestimating her. And then Sikong Ling comes out and sees her up there, and he just says 'be careful' and leaves. That's it. That's the whole interaction. But it's everything. He doesn't try to help her down, he doesn't make a big deal about her being small, he just acknowledges what she's doing and trusts that she'll handle it. And she does. In one hour she's fixed a roof that would have taken someone else half a day, thanks to those pills she has in her space. But the story doesn't present it that way—to everyone else, Chen Xi is just remarkably capable. What I love is how the narrative lets this moment breathe without commenting on it. No internal monologue from Chen Xi about how she's proving herself, no dramatic music from the narration. Just a small person on a roof, doing what needs to be done, while someone tall watches from below. And then later when Sikong Ling brings the bricklayer back and Chen Xi immediately takes charge of the repair, that's when you realize this isn't a one-time thing. This is who she is. The way she handles money too—paying Uncle Yang promptly, accepting Sikong Ling's payment for the shopping trip without any awkwardness. These are small character beats but they stack up. Chen Xi isn't just surviving in this new world, she's optimizing it. And I think that's what makes the emotional core of this story so satisfying. It's not about grand romantic gestures or life-and-death stakes. It's about watching someone who's been told she's weak repeatedly prove that she's not, in the most practical, unglamorous way possible.

"First observe this scar," answered Ulysses, "which I got from a boar's tusk when I was hunting on Mount Parnassus. You and my mother had sent me to Autolycus, my mother's father, to receive the presents which when he was over here he had promised to give me. Furthermore I will point out to you the trees in the vineyard which you gave me, and I asked you all about them as I followed you round the garden. We went over them all, and you told me their names and what they all were. You gave me thirteen pear trees, ten apple trees, and forty fig trees; you also said you would give me fifty rows of vines; there was corn planted between each row, and they yield grapes of every kind when the heat of heaven has been laid heavy upon them."

She first checked the small rooms which were especially designed and decorated for the two boys. When she saw the rooms to be empty, she went to the guest room. The guest room was brightly decorated with carpets laid on the floor. The room was enlightened but, there was not even a single sight of the baby. She then went to the living room, no traces of the baby boy. She was about to go to the drawing room when her phone rang.
