Character Development: 10/10
I just finished reading these chapters in one sitting and I need to process what I just experienced. The pacing here is absolutely relentless in the best way. We start with the engagement announcement and Luo Zhen's fake congratulations, move into the dowry confrontation which could have been a boring accounting scene but instead reads like a thriller, then the emotional farewell with the grandmother, and then the departure procession that's described with such cinematic scope. And right when you think the chapter is winding down, we get Pei Ji watching from the crowd with that sword tassel, and then Shen Zhirou's internal monologue that basically sets up the next arc of conflict. The chapter breaks are perfectly placed too — ending on Luo Zhen waking from her dream and immediately having to prepare for her meeting with the Pei family, then cutting to Luo Fu suffering through the heat on the road. "We haven't even been on the road half an hour and we're already this miserable" — and we're left wondering how she's going to survive a thousand-mile journey. The author knows exactly when to give you emotional relief and when to punch you in the gut again. The transition from the Luo household's petty scheming to the vast, uncertain journey ahead creates this incredible sense of scale. Every chapter ends on a note that makes you immediately want to read the next one.
