Let's talk about Yang Gongcai because this man is a walking red flag wrapped in peasant clothing. First of all, the way he tries to peek into the basket like some kid at a birthday party he wasn't invited to — "What did you find?" — and then immediately tries to dismiss their discovery as worthless firewood? Classic move. He knows exactly what those roots are worth, and he's testing whether they're stupid enough to reveal the secret. The fact that Yang Shu nervously hides the basket behind his back tells me everything I need to know about this kid's survival instincts, which honestly is kind of adorable in a tragic way. But the real moment is when Zhou Qiong shuts him down. This woman has been quiet all chapter, just smiling and nodding, and then Yang Gongcai brings up the river incident and she goes from zero to sixty in one sentence. The text says he was "startled so much that he took a step back" — that physical reaction says it all. He expected her to be cowed, submissive, the typical sister-in-law who takes abuse and smiles. Instead she looks him dead in the eye and tells him exactly what happened. And his response? A forced smile and a quick exit. He didn't even finish his sentence about her not being in control. That's not dominance, that's fear masked as authority. And what about the kid Debao? Running around trying to eat poisonous-looking roots because "it's smelly" and his dad calls him a dog? The family dynamics in this household are... complicated to say the least.
