The pacing in these chapters is honestly masterful because it moves like a rollercoaster that somehow never makes you nauseous. You open with high drama — a punch thrown, a confrontation with the ex, Shen An having a medical episode from emotional distress. That's chapter 27 energy, full throttle. Then it pivots HARD into comedy with the Cheng Yu reveal, and suddenly you're laughing at "Do I have to give you red envelopes during New Year too?!" The tonal whiplash could have been jarring but it lands perfectly because the emotional through-line — Shen An's insecurity about losing Wen Li — connects both scenes. Then it slows down to domestic sweetness: the lock screen photo, the morning cuddle, Ye Shen showing up uninvited for wontons. The chapter ends on this note of ordinary happiness after extraordinary tension, which is such a satisfying rhythm. The only thing I'd note is that the transition from the hospital confrontation to the private room dinner feels slightly compressed — we skip over some emotional processing — but honestly, the author knows when to push forward and when to linger, and this section gets it right.
I'll be completely honest. The novel wasn't terrible, despite having a laundry list of overused clichés and a somewhat idealized main character (Mary Sue). It was actually above average. While the characters weren't extraordinary, they were likable enough to keep readers engaged. I also appreciated the handling of magic, although it lacked any groundbreaking elements. The setting and character interactions were satisfactory, providing enough depth for readers to invest.
However, the novel fell short due to the incredibly annoying protagonist. Unlike other stories where the MC takes action against those who provoke them, this character repeatedly suffers without doing anything about it. It becomes frustratingly tolerating the MC's passivity, as if the author is intentionally pushing readers' buttons. The lack of any real revenge plot makes it unbearable for me at times.
If you can overlook the repetitive and clichéd portrayal of aristocrats mistreating the MC, you might consider it slightly above average. It's decent enough to recommend if you're looking for a casual read with minimal expectations met.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate it a 3. I'm giving it 2 out of 5 stars here because initially, I found some enjoyment in it. For those who can endure the annoyances, it might be a 5 or even a 6 – a middling to slightly better-than-average novel.
