One of my favourites. Desolate Era is a book where you can see the progress every chapter, be it cultivation, relationships, or something else. The beginning few chapters may be slow, but a foundation needs to be built for the action. Side characters are mostly dealt with, at some point or another.

A small boy ran through a dark alley. He could barely see his own breath that cold night. He looked over his shoulder frightfully, a big shadow following him closely. He fell into the dirty muck as he lost his footing on the wet ground. He turned around, only to see a pair cold eyes stare back at him.

Ignoring something like this was easy, with everyone off the streets it would be a whole lot easier for him to go scavenging. As he continued his search, something inside him turned, eating him up from inside. He was curious. As much as he wanted to move on as his chance of finding something a bit more decent had increased, he wanted to know what had caught everyone's attention.

Several minutes passed like this before the blood moon began to fade. Shouts of joy could be heard all over the city. But Jeremiah couldn't rejoice, not yet. His wife was still in labour, he was still very worried.
