Bai Wei is a twenty-four-year-old writer and a graduate of Beidu University who appears to be the epitome of perfection and nobility. Despite his distinguished background, he has retreated to the isolated Snow Mountain Town with his husband, Lu Sen, a maintenance worker. Their marriage is the subject of local gossip, with townspeople believing the relationship is strained due to their emotional distance. In reality, Bai Wei is a cold, calculating individual who suffers from severe psychological disorders and a lack of empathy. He entered the marriage not out of love, but as a means to escape the suffocating control of his traditional grandfather. His true intention is to kill Lu Sen to collect the life insurance payout and disappear forever. The story begins with Bai Wei seeking marriage counseling, not to save the relationship, but to find a way to successfully murder his husband without suspicion.

The core conflict revolves around the deadly game between Bai Wei and Lu Sen. Bai Wei has already attempted to kill Lu Sen multiple times, including poisoning his milk, rigging the stairs, and hiding a revolver, all of which have failed. Six months prior, Lu Sen died in Naples and was buried in a coffin, only to reappear and reunite with Bai Wei. Lu Sen, on the other hand, is a monster who has shed his human skin and taken on the identity of a mercenary-turned-repairman. He views Bai Wei as a prized possession and a beautiful doll to be collected. Unlike Bai Wei, who wants to kill him, Lu Sen is desperate to maintain the facade of a happy, normal marriage to blend into human society and avoid detection by his former enemies.

A key turning point occurs when Bai Wei attempts to poison Lu Sen with a toxic substance in tomato soup. To his shock, Lu Sen survives the poisoning, displaying an inhuman resilience that terrifies Bai Wei. That night, Lu Sen exhibits strange, predatory behavior, hugging Bai Wei tightly and displaying an overwhelming possessiveness. He reveals that he can feel his heartbeat stop and start, confirming his supernatural nature. Bai Wei later knocks Lu Sen unconscious with a heavy object, believing he has finally succeeded in killing him. However, Lu Sen revives almost immediately, revealing that he has a condition where his heartbeat and breathing can temporarily cease under stress.
