The Pretty Wife Who Moved into the Military Compound

Set in Guihua Town during the Duanwu Festival of 1990, the story centers on Chen Yufeng, a woman who has spent seven years raising twin daughters alone while her husband, Han Chao, served on the front lines of a border conflict. Han Chao is renowned in the town as a violent troublemaker in his youth, feared for his brutal temper and fighting skills. Although he sent a telegram requesting Yufeng to join him in the capital as a military spouse, the townspeople spread malicious rumors that he is a monster who eats children and beats his family. Yufeng, however, remains resolute in her decision to move, driven by a prophetic dream she experienced recently. In this dream, she witnessed a tragic future where her obsession with bearing a son leads to her death in childbirth and the demise of her daughters. Determined to alter this fate, she plans to secure a better life for her children and avoid the pitfalls of her past.

Complicating Yufeng’s plans is the antagonistic behavior of her sister-in-law, Su Hong, and her eldest brother, Han Feng. Their mother, Wang Guoguo, has suddenly gone blind, and Su Hong is eager to shift the burden of caring for her onto Yufeng. Su Hong spreads rumors and manipulates situations to discourage Yufeng from leaving, hoping she will stay behind to care for the elderly woman. The tension escalates when Su Hong’s son, Han Ming, deliberately burns the bedding in Yufeng’s courtyard, an act intended to provoke Han Chao into a violent rage that would force Yufeng to remain in the village. The diagnosis reveals that Wang Guoguo’s blindness is caused by a treatable blood clot, and she agrees to undergo surgery in Beijing. This development disrupts Su Hong’s plans, as the mother-in-law is no longer a permanent burden for Yufeng to manage in the countryside.

Parallel to this family drama is the story of Qi Cailing, Yufeng’s rival and childhood friend. Qi Cailing has transmigrated into the body of a character from a novel she wrote, a "stepmother literature" story where she marries a high-ranking military officer and raises brilliant stepsons. In her original narrative, Chen Yufeng served as a tragic foil, destined to suffer due to her rural background and lack of sons. Qi Cailing, now living the life she authored, views Yufeng with a mix of pity and superiority, believing that Yufeng’s fate is sealed by her circumstances. She attempts to dissuade Yufeng from moving to the capital, suggesting that Yufeng would be better off staying in the village to care for her mother-in-law.

As Han Chao prepares to leave with his mother for surgery in the capital, he brings gifts for his daughters, softening their initial fear of him. Yufeng discovers that Su Hong is attempting to sell her mother-in-law’s stolen jade pendant, revealing the depth of the sister-in-law’s greed and desperation. The story moves toward a confrontation as Yufeng and Han Chao prepare to leave Guihua Town, determined to break free from the toxic family dynamics and the tragic future foretold in Yufeng’s dream. The narrative sets the stage for Yufeng’s transformation from a submissive rural wife into a woman who controls her own destiny, while Qi Cailing’s fabricated perfection faces the reality of the world she entered.
