The Heavenly Court’s Three Rebellious Fellows Went to the West to Fetch Scriptures

Li Miaoci, a modern woman, transmigrates into the world of Journey to the West, awakening as a mortal disciple traveling with Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and the White Dragon Horse. Expecting a leisurely pilgrimage that will allow her to return home, she discovers that the journey has been drastically altered. Zhu Bajie, the original second disciple, is replaced by Yang Jian, the God Erlang, who is bound to the journey by heavenly law. Later, Nezha, the Third Prince, joins as the third disciple, having been trapped in a time loop at the Flowing Sands River for over a thousand days. The group now consists of Tang Sanzang and three of the Celestial Court’s most rebellious deities, all seeking to end their respective curses by reaching the Western Heaven.

The core conflict arises from the deviation from the original script. Li Miaoci realizes that the 81 tribulations are being disrupted by the presence of these powerful, unwilling participants. At Gao Village, the plot to capture Zhu Bajie fails when Yang Jian appears and drives away the demon, forcing Li Miaoci to seek out the Marshal of Heavenly Canopies herself to restore the timeline. At Yellow Wind Ridge, the Yellow Wind Monster is consumed by a divine beast, removing a key tribulation. At the Flowing Sands River, Nezha’s repeated loops are broken by the arrival of the altered group. Li Miaoci attempts to guide events back to their intended course, but the presence of Yang Jian and Nezha, who possess immense power and little patience for the journey, creates instability.

A significant turning point occurs when Nezha, frustrated by his eternal loop, attempts to kill Tang Sanzang to break the cycle. Although he fails due to the Heavenly Dao’s constraints, his violent nature leads to conflict with the monk. In a mortal town, Nezha kills a group of bandits who threaten an innkeeper’s daughter. Tang Sanzang, horrified by the killing, attempts to expel Nezha. Li Miaoci intervenes, arguing that killing evil is justified, and persuades the monk to spare Nezha. This incident highlights the growing tension between the monk’s compassion and the disciples’ lethal capabilities.

The group arrives at Mount Longevity and Wuzhuang Temple, home of the Ginseng Fruit Tree. Nezha, seeing an opportunity to cause chaos and end the journey prematurely, goads Sun Wukong into knocking down the tree. When Zhenyuan Great Immortal returns and binds the disciples, Nezha flees back to the Celestial Court to steal the Exquisite Pagoda from Li Tianwang. Yang Jian and Li Miaoci follow him to investigate the anomalies in the Heavenly Dao. They discover that Marshal Tianpeng and General Curtain-Roller were not punished for their past sins as they were in the original story, suggesting that the rules governing the journey have been fundamentally rewritten.

Li Miaoci, Yang Jian, and Nezha steal elixirs from Laozi’s alchemy room to empower Li Miaoci, who lacks cultivation. They then proceed to the Peach of Immortality Garden. The story follows their investigation into why the Heavenly Dao has altered the journey, with Li Miaoci caught between her desire to return home and the need to help the deities break their curses. The narrative explores the dynamics between the rebellious disciples and the compassionate monk, as well as the mysterious forces manipulating their fates.

As the journey continues, the group faces the challenge of completing the remaining tribulations while dealing with the internal conflicts of their altered composition. Li Miaoci serves as the anchor to the original story, using her knowledge to navigate the changing landscape. The presence of Yang Jian and Nezha, who are not bound by the same limitations as the original disciples, allows them to bypass some dangers but creates new political and spiritual complications. The story moves toward a resolution where the true nature of the Heavenly Dao’s interference is revealed, and the characters must decide whether to accept their new destinies or fight to restore the original order.
