Xu Huaiqian, a modern civil servant, dies after rescuing two drowning children and transmigrates into the body of a sickly farmer's son in an ancient dynasty. The original owner, born weak and premature, had passed the Tongsheng examination at fourteen but lost his parents to wolves shortly after. His uncle, Xu Dalang, exploited the funeral expenses to pawn the boy off as a bought husband to Chen Liejiu, a wealthy and feared debt collector in the village. The original owner, unable to accept this fate, jumped into a river and died. Xu Huaiqian wakes up in the Chen household, where Matchmaker Hong tries to persuade him to accept his role. She explains that Chen Liejiu is handsome, rich, and considerate, having personally saved him from the river and hired a doctor. However, Xu Huaiqian is resistant due to his modern values and disdain for forced marriage.

The world Xu Huaiqian inhabits includes a third gender known as gers, who are male in appearance but can bear children. Their status is lower than women's, and they experience periodic estrus. Chen Liejiu is a ger who has struggled to find a husband due to his fierce reputation. Doctor Sun diagnoses Xu Huaiqian with a congenital deficiency exacerbated by trauma, stating that he requires expensive medicine and a life of luxury to survive. This diagnosis alarms the Chen family, as they cannot afford such costly treatment. Chen Liejiu, however, is determined to keep Xu Huaiqian, partly because of his upcoming estrus and partly because he finds the sickly scholar intriguing. He offers Xu Huaiqian a choice: take all his wealth and leave, or stay as his husband and manage the family finances.

Xu Huaiqian, facing the reality that his home has been occupied by his uncle and he has no other recourse, accepts Chen Liejiu's offer. He realizes that staying with the beautiful and wealthy Chen Liejiu is more advantageous than returning to a hostile family. Chen Liejiu, relieved, introduces Xu Huaiqian to his family, including his younger sister Chen Xiaomei and his sister-in-law Wang Wanwan. Chen Xiaomei is initially hostile, fearing that Xu Huaiqian's illness will drain the family's resources. Xu Huaiqian wins her over by weaving delicate palm-leaf insects and apologizing for breaking his earlier promise to leave. Wang Wanwan, who was rescued by Chen Liejiu, is loyal and caring, preparing special food for Xu Huaiqian to help him recover.

Chen Liejiu takes decisive action to secure Xu Huaiqian's future. He gathers a group of men and demolishes the Xu family's second house, which his uncle had occupied. He uses the materials to build a modern-style toilet for Xu Huaiqian, cutting off any possibility of the sickly man returning to that home. Chen Liejiu also demands repayment of the ten taels of silver debt from Xu Dalang, forcing the uncle to pay up to stop the destruction. This bold move shocks the village but secures Xu Huaiqian's financial restitution. Chen Liejiu gives Xu Huaiqian control over the family's finances, although he secretly uses some of the collected debts to fund Xu Huaiqian's recovery and education.

Xu Huaiqian discovers a bronze mirror in his belongings, which reveals his haggard appearance. He is distressed by his lack of beauty but is comforted by Chen Liejiu, who finds him attractive despite his illness. Chen Liejiu insists on supporting Xu Huaiqian's studies, believing that becoming a scholar will give him confidence and status. Xu Huaiqian begins to settle into his new life, managing the household and interacting with Chen Liejiu's family. The story follows their developing relationship as Chen Liejiu protects Xu Huaiqian from external threats while Xu Huaiqian helps manage the family's internal affairs. The narrative highlights the contrast between Xu Huaiqian's modern sensibilities and the traditional customs of the ancient world, as well as the evolving dynamics between the two leads.

Well written with lots of potential but unfortunately lacking in a few aspects. This novel has great writing quality and an engaging and entertaining plot, compared to most webnovels this is definitely in the top 1% however there are still a few things that should definitely be fixed. (As of chapter 86) The timeline makes no sense. The game started in January of 2100, however he doesn’t meet Emma (Lotus) until into 2102 (According to his last life flashback). Although the events that have taken place in the story so far seem like they may have happened in a week they ‘supposedly’ happened over a few months, even then it would still be early or mid 2100, in six months his mother would be dead. No need to mention 2102 plus however many months it took for him and Emma to have a serious relationship. Another major plothole I’ve realized while writing this is the supposed ‘months’ that have passed. All the fighting has taken place over the course of a few days, not counting time in between events, this is fine, they could have been doing lots of stuff in between that we just don’t see, but we can tell this is not happening since the MC has no growth between events, all his skills, levels, items etc have been gained in the mere few days we have seen. So unless you are going to tell me that he has been spending the majority of these multiple months he has been playing and supposedly been to busy to spend time with his parents (according to a few chapters ago) doing absolutely nothing this simply doesn’t make any sense. Even if this time issue was fixed and the time was compressed back to a few days it would still not fix the issue of his mother living years past when she supposedly died.  The next point isn’t a plot hole but something that irks me endlessly the main character is pathetic and brain dead. Why did he not immediately get his mother checked for cancer and treatment when reincarnated. You would think they would have a whole lot of a better chance at treating cancer if you noticed it 1-2 years earlier, but no, he says nothing. Second the whole situation with Emma honestly frames the MC to be a weak and pathetic simp. And then we have this last chapter where he just completely goes off the rails the second he hits some adversity, he hasn’t event attempt to change his mom’s future yet and now he’s going to throw his life away, again, sad and pathetic. Additionally the ease at which he gains power and the OPness of the power he gains is a bit annoying, I’m not trying to complain about the MC being OP in a OP mc novel but it seems like it’s gone a little to far. He can turn into a ghost indefinitely and still use his esper powers (which might I add have no energy cost) to kill whatever he wants. While as a ghost it seems he cannot be harmed by physical attacks, infact we have not yet seen him get harmed at all while a ghost (Does this make him invincible? I assume there is some limit, even still it seems like to most creatures cannot harm him while he can kill whatever). If this wasn’t enough with synergy between his fire skill and the skill that lets him change into an animal he can turn into a phoneix, with his flames around him even if he dies (which he does) he simply is reborn in the fire and can continuously deal damage to more powerful enemies without any risk. (Again, is he invincible? I’m honestly not sure)

The book as a whole is nice but to me it's exercise in frustration and don't tell me that's how 14y olds behave, killing changes you and he isn't thinking strait. Sure I could agree that he is hormonally challenged but when it comes to a pretty face he always mellows out out, why? Cuz s*x, that's why.The rest is pretty nice minus the bog standart cultivation novel plot armor. He finds this plant that ravages his body and making it more powerful but giving him structural damage that would cause problems later. Oh look the nearby pond has just the thing... (Dripping with sarcasm)... What a coincidence.
