We're not talking about learning it as a kid, but learning it as an adult, taking language classes. That is impressive because it's hard learning a language, you don't speak every day. I took Spanish multiple years in High school, still can't speak anything, but the basics. Now imagine, a kid that knew no Spanish, and just by taking a few high school courses, they start to speak it well. That's like a genius. It's the same reason people think polyglots, are cool/interesting. In other words, it's not the English that's amazing, it's their ability to learn it easily, while their peers cannot.
