Hearing You Say Love

Zou Beiyuan is a professional boxer and co-owner of a boxing bar in Rong City, currently estranged from his father, a powerful figure in the combat sports industry who controls his career. Forced to return home after a contract dispute, Zou Beiyuan faces a torrential rainstorm that floods the old town and stalls his car. While stranded in the rising water, he is rescued by his new neighbor, Su Ming, a quiet, tall man who communicates exclusively through writing and sign language due to being deaf. Su Ming drives him home in his Audi, and despite Zou Beiyuan’s initial assumption that Su Ming is mute, he later discovers the man wears a cochlear implant. Their first interaction is marked by Zou Beiyuan’s blunt, masculine demeanor and Su Ming’s calm, observant nature.

Unbeknownst to Zou Beiyuan, Su Ming is a successful but reclusive comic artist known by the pen name Shu Yu Ming Jin. He specializes in adult-oriented boys' love (BL) comics, a fact he keeps hidden from his straight-acting neighbor. Su Ming had been suffering from severe writer's block until he saw Zou Beiyuan moving into the apartment across the hall. The boxer’s physical presence and wild energy provided the exact inspiration Su Ming needed, leading him to secretly sketch Zou Beiyuan and channel those feelings into his latest series, "Rabbit Conspiracy, Wolf Trail." The story within the comic mirrors their dynamic, featuring a wild wolf and a gentle rabbit, reflecting Su Ming’s repressed attraction.

Their relationship deepens after an incident at the boxing bar. Su Ming, uncomfortable in noisy environments, attends a gathering with his friend Chen Muchao, who is also deaf and uses a cochlear implant. In the restroom, Su Ming is harassed by a drunk patron who attempts to assault him. Su Ming fights back, punching and kicking the man, but is cornered before Zou Beiyuan intervenes. Zou Beiyuan, revealed to be the owner of the bar, effortlessly subdues the attacker and handles the situation with cold efficiency, threatening to expose the man’s harassment on the bar’s social media. Su Ming, initially believing Zou Beiyuan to be merely security staff, is surprised to learn of his true status. Zou Beiyuan offers to accompany Su Ming in the future to protect him from similar advances, misinterpreting Su Ming’s silence as shyness rather than a disability.

A pivotal turning point occurs when Zou Beiyuan’s sister sends a package containing a collected volume of Su Ming’s comic. Curious and annoyed by his sister’s obsession with the "weird" book, Zou Beiyuan opens it and discovers the explicit BL content. He is shocked to find the author’s signature matches Su Ming’s handwriting. Driven by confusion and suspicion, he downloads the comic app and reads the entire series, including the explicit chapters. He realizes with growing bewilderment that his quiet, gentle neighbor is the creator of the provocative artwork. Meanwhile, Su Ming remains unaware of Zou Beiyuan’s discovery, continuing to interact with him through written notes and sign language, occasionally testing the waters with ambiguous gestures.

The narrative follows the evolving dynamic between the two men as they navigate their differences. Zou Beiyuan begins to question his own perceptions of masculinity and sexuality after consuming Su Ming’s work, while Su Ming struggles with the fear of rejection should his secret profession be revealed. Their interactions shift from polite neighborliness to a more intimate connection, highlighted by shared meals and conversations where Zou Beiyuan learns basic sign language. The story explores themes of identity, artistic expression, and the barriers of communication, as both characters slowly peel back the layers of their guarded lives. Zou Beiyuan’s protective instincts clash with his confusion, while Su Ming’s creative inspiration becomes inextricably linked to his growing feelings for the boxer, setting the stage for a confrontation between their hidden truths and public personas.
