Su Huaiyin is a pampered young woman from Beijing who transmigrates into the body of a top university student and piano soloist in 1983. Born into a prestigious revolutionary family, she is accustomed to a life of luxury and comfort. However, her grandfather forces her into an arranged marriage with Cheng Beitang, a man she has never met, based on a decades-old pact between their families. Cheng Beitang is the battalion commander of the Northwest Military District, known as the "Cold-faced Demon" for his ruthless efficiency and stern demeanor. Su Huaiyin, horrified by the prospect of living in the harsh Gobi Desert, travels to the remote base with a divorce application in her bag, determined to end the marriage immediately.
Upon arriving at the base, Su Huaiyin is shocked by the desolate environment and the crude living conditions. She confronts Cheng Beitang at the gate, demanding a divorce in front of his soldiers. Cheng Beitang, who finds her delicate and high-maintenance nature burdensome, initially agrees to the divorce but cannot send her back due to a broken train line and dangerous wolf packs in the wilderness. He forces her to stay in their shared quarters for a few days. The couple’s early interactions are marked by friction; Su Huaiyin complains about the hard bed, the cold water, and the mosquitoes, while Cheng Beitang views her as a troublesome burden. Despite his cold exterior, he secretly tends to her needs, such as planing a smooth wooden board for her bed and cooking noodles for her when she is starving.
As days pass, Su Huaiyin begins to understand the depth of Cheng Beitang’s character. She discovers a rusted iron box hidden under his bed containing remittance receipts to the families of fallen comrades and the martyr certificates of his father and brothers. She learns that he is the sole survivor of a family of heroes and has lived a life of sacrifice and solitude. The box also contains a will he wrote the day before her arrival, leaving all his assets to her in case he dies. This revelation transforms Su Huaiyin’s perspective; she realizes his coldness is a shield for his grief and that he has been preparing for death while quietly caring for her. She tears up her divorce application and declares that he is not allowed to die, claiming his life as her own.
The relationship deepens as Cheng Beitang becomes protective of Su Huaiyin, defending her against gossiping military wives who criticize her for being lazy and extravagant. He publicly supports her right to live comfortably, using his own meager salary to buy her candies and clothes. In return, Su Huaiyin takes on household renovations, transforming their drab quarters into a warm home and learning to adapt to the harsh environment. When Cheng Beitang is called away for a dangerous mission against drug smugglers, Su Huaiyin supports him emotionally, understanding the risks he faces. The story concludes with the couple’s bond solidified, as Cheng Beitang fights not just for his country, but to return to the wife who has given his life new meaning.
