Feasting on Splendor

Wen Lan, a culinary and nutrition expert from the twenty-first century, awakens in the body of Lin Furong, a sixteen-year-old peasant girl in the Southern Dynasty. Immediately upon transmigration, she finds herself hanging from a pine tree, having attempted suicide after being betrayed by her lover, Meng Qiancheng. A hunter named Xuan Yue discovers her and cuts her down, offering only cold indifference before leaving. Rather than returning to her village to face an arranged marriage with a grotesque widower, Wen Lan follows the hunter to his secluded mountain courtyard, seeking refuge and a way to survive.

Wen Lan settles into a woodshed on the hunter’s property, using her cooking skills to prepare a meal from dried meats and citrus leaves. Xuan Yue’s subordinate, Qingfeng, returns with the hunter and is impressed by the food, though he remains suspicious of Wen Lan’s refined knowledge. While Qingfeng investigates Wen Lan’s background in Yushou Village, he learns the full extent of her tragedy: Meng Qiancheng orchestrated a scheme with a local bully to ruin her reputation, then married another woman and blamed the seduction on her. Desperate to secure a future for Wen Lan and provide companionship for his master, Qingfeng fabricates a betrothal, offering a gold ingot to Lin Furong’s greedy parents and claiming Xuan Yue wishes to marry her.

Wen Lan overhears Qingfeng’s plan and realizes the hunter holds a status far higher than a mere woodsman. She confronts Xuan Yue, pleading for shelter and agreeing to the fake marriage under strict conditions: she must serve him but is forbidden from entering his room or speaking to him unnecessarily. Xuan Yue agrees, unaware that Wen Lan is not the submissive peasant girl Qingfeng expects. The next day, Wen Lan disguises herself as a man and accompanies Qingfeng to the local market, where she inadvertently encounters Meng Qiancheng. She overhears him being blackmailed by the bully Sun Dafu, confirming that Meng Qiancheng’s betrayal was a calculated move to secure a more advantageous marriage.

Armed with this knowledge, Wen Lan returns to her family home at night to retrieve vegetables and assert her new status. She firmly rejects her parents’ demands for future favors and warns them against spreading gossip that could damage her husband’s reputation. Her confidence and sharp tongue unsettle her family, who are accustomed to treating her as a disposable asset. Back at the mountain residence, Wen Lan begins to integrate into Xuan Yue’s life, cooking for him and gradually earning his grudging respect. Meanwhile, Qingfeng grows increasingly concerned about Wen Lan’s unusual capabilities and her lack of fear, suspecting she may be more than a simple village girl.

As Wen Lan establishes herself in her new role, she begins to plot her path to independence. She recognizes that her modern knowledge of nutrition and cooking gives her a unique advantage in this era. However, the shadow of the imperial court looms over Xuan Yue’s past; he is a disgraced general living in hiding, and his true identity remains a secret. Wen Lan’s presence disrupts his isolation, forcing him to confront the political dangers that drove him to the mountains. The story moves toward a complex dynamic where Wen Lan must navigate the hunter’s hidden past while building her own livelihood, all while dealing with the lingering threats from Meng Qiancheng and the scheming villagers of Yushou Village.
