Zhu Mingyue dies alone in a garbage heap, only to have her consciousness flooded with the memories of a novel she once read. She realizes she has been reincarnated into the body of Zhu Mingyue, the vicious supporting character and ex-wife destined to abandon her husband, Gu Yanzhou, and their son for a scumbag named Fang Deyu. In her previous life, she followed Fang Deyu, was swindled of her money, and sold to human traffickers, ending in a miserable death. Now reborn with full knowledge of the plot, she wakes up in the past, moments before Fang Deyu attempts to manipulate her into divorcing Gu Yanzhou. Instead of falling for his lies, she physically assaults him and his accomplice, her cousin Zhu Pan’er, who orchestrated the scheme out of jealousy.
Gu Yanzhou, who had been secretly following his wife due to her recent cold behavior, witnesses the confrontation. In the original story, he misinterprets the events and believes Zhu Mingyue is unfaithful, leading to their divorce. However, this time Zhu Mingyue confronts him directly. She reveals that she is pregnant with their second child and scolds him for lying about their agreement to only have one child. Her straightforward nature and lack of guile convince him of her innocence. The couple reconciles, and Zhu Mingyue’s parents, upon learning of Zhu Pan’er’s betrayal, punish the cousin severely and strip her of the job Zhu Mingyue had temporarily given her.
Zhu Mingyue’s priorities shift from surviving the novel’s tragic plot to improving her life. She plans to sell her factory job to secure funds and, most importantly, prepare for the reinstatement of the college entrance exam, an event that will change the nation’s future. She also seeks to protect her son, Tuan Tuan, from the emotional neglect he suffered in the original story. Meanwhile, the novel’s heroine, Tang Mengyao, is also reborn. Having suffered abuse from her scumbag ex-husband and stepsister in her past life, she resolves to change her fate and pursue education. Tang Mengyao finds employment at the same textile factory as Zhu Mingyue, unaware that the beautiful woman she observes with Gu Yanzhou is the very character destined to be discarded in the original plot.
The narrative explores the intersection of two reborn individuals in 1970s China. Zhu Mingyue, confident in her knowledge of the plot, navigates social dynamics with ease, winning over neighbors and family. She maintains a loving relationship with Gu Yanzhou, who is deeply devoted to her and eager to make amends for his past suspicions. Their bond strengthens as they prepare for the new baby and Tuan Tuan’s integration into their changing family dynamic. Zhu Mingyue’s defiance of the original “villainess” script disrupts the expected trajectory of the story, forcing other characters to adapt to her unpredictable actions.
Tang Mengyao’s perspective introduces a parallel struggle. She is determined to succeed academically and economically, rejecting the role of the tragic heroine. Her encounter with Gu Yanzhou at the factory and later at a store highlights the shifting dynamics between the characters. While Tang Mengyao initially harbors resentment toward the “ungrateful” wife who abandoned her husband, she gradually learns the truth of Zhu Mingyue’s character. The story moves away from the original plot’s focus on romantic entanglement and betrayal, instead centering on personal growth, family stability, and the pursuit of education in a changing society. Zhu Mingyue’s actions ensure that she retains her husband’s love and provides a better future for her children, effectively rewriting her destiny.
As the college entrance exam approaches, both Zhu Mingyue and Tang Mengyao prepare for the challenge. Zhu Mingyue balances her pregnancy with her studies, supported by her husband and parents. The tension between the two women, once potential rivals in a romantic narrative, transforms into a complex dynamic of observation and eventual understanding. The story concludes with the couple returning to their home, solidifying their family unit and looking forward to a future defined by their own choices rather than the author’s original design. Zhu Mingyue’s rebirth allows her to correct past mistakes, protect her loved ones, and seize the opportunities that history offers, turning a tale of villainy into one of resilience and happiness.
