After the Substitute Marriage

Xu Yingyue is the youngest daughter of Master Xu, born to a concubine who died when she was three. Raised in the remote Clear Brook Courtyard, she endures the cold indifference and petty cruelties of her stepmother, Madam Xu, who frequently punishes her for minor infractions such as greeting too loudly or too softly. Her only solace is her love for reading travelogues and the quiet companionship of her two maids, Shinan and Yuzan. The narrative shifts when Fang Hanxiao returns to the capital after five years of absence, having survived a severe injury that left him unable to speak.
