Polyglots are cool, but other languages are
just never mentioned. And English is not just a cool and useful skill but a symbol of status. Have you never met this situations in novels/dramas when someone is treated like country bumpkin because they don't know it (they are literally despised, be it kids or adults) or treated like nobles because they said a few words with barely understandable accent? It's everywhere. If you know other skills, then you are just another passersby, but if it's English, then you are elite genius. Maybe because studying and working abroad will also raise your status, so English is a necessity, but not everyone can learn it
