Qiao Heping proposed using the Hu family's tomato harvest to settle the debt. The tomatoes in the Hu family's vegetable plot were valued at twenty to thirty yuan at fifteen fen per jin. Other neighbors who had also lent money to the Hu family joined in, and within half an hour people arrived with sacks to collect the tomatoes. More than half of Master Hu's monthly wages were effectively taken this way.
