On October 21st, 1977, the Ministry of Education announced the restoration of the unified national entrance examination. Admission would be merit-based. Eligible workers, peasants, educated youth, demobilized soldiers, cadres, and graduating high school students could register voluntarily. This caused all of Beijing to boil over with excitement.
