Three preliminary qipao designs Yang Zhiyan sent to Qin Yuzheng for his mother. The first was moon-white with narrow piping and embroidered orchid sprigs. The second was light lavender with delicate pleats on collar and cuffs. The third was pale blue with a fitted waist and flared hem inspired by Republican-era school uniforms. Qin Yuzheng ultimately chose the lavender design.
