A heating bed design invented by Xie Chengze, built with bricks and stones rather than wooden frames. Firewood is burned for cooking, and hot smoke travels through channels in the kang to heat the surface, exiting through a chimney. Xie Chengze presented blueprints of this invention to Emperor Jian.
