Three explosive devices were sent by the Second Prince in a wooden crate. One was used by Emperor Jian in Jingcheng, the second was demonstrated at the border pass to intimidate the Xiongnu. The power was enhanced by combining it with the method of heating stones to high temperatures and dousing them with cold water, making the rocks extremely fragile.
