A thin and frail little girl who picks mushrooms and carries firewood taller than herself. Her father ran away and no longer wants her. Her grandmother is paralyzed in bed, her grandfather is old, and the whole family is supported by her mother alone. She helps her mother with heavy work including cutting grass to feed pigs and chickens, and drying wild vegetables for winter. She feels that she and her brother are a burden to her mother. She is described as having a strong sense of responsibility despite her young age.
