Zhang Shuihua's shrewish mother, manipulative and status-seeking. She gives her son twenty cents to play and instructs her daughter to shout for help when a military officer passes. She spreads false news of her daughter's disappearance to gather villagers and create a scene to force the officer to take responsibility.
