Gu Cheng'an's grandmother, age sixty-six, with white-streaked hair and a warm, gentle face. She is a former nurse at a military hospital who once stitched up Su Yin's grandfather's wound. She is gentle but firm, able to keep her hot-tempered husband in line. She initially refused to return home but was persuaded by Gu Cheng'an.
