The patriarch of the Tang family and the brother of Jiang Yu's grandmother. He is elderly, thin, with sharp bright eyes, and of similar age to the Duke of Chu. He is a Confucian scholar who adheres strictly to Confucian doctrine but is also pragmatic about political connections. He tested Jiang Yu with a Confucian question and was impressed by her unconventional but well-reasoned answers. He gave Jiang Yu his father's inkstone as a gift.
