Also known as General Shen, the Zhenbei General, a second-rank military official. He is a broad-framed man with a thick beard who has spent twenty years fighting on the northern frontier. He is Shen Jinghong's father. Deeply concerned with family honor and reputation, he brought his son tied up to the Grand Tutor's residence to apologize publicly. He is strict and authoritative, at one point kicking his son to make him kneel and threatening to break his legs if he does not reform within three months. He is described as having spent a lifetime building his reputation.
